The Bluegrass Album, Vol. 5: Sweet Sunny South, from The Bluegrass Album Band in 1989, is the final installment in Rounder's long-running series and among the most musically relaxed of the volumes. The title track and My Home's Across the Blue Ridge Mountains anchor a set that favors Southern pastoral imagery, while Big Black Train, Out in the Cold World, and Preaching Praying Singing maintain the hard-driving ensemble character the project established. Rock Hearts and Someone Took My Place With You represent the romantic and melancholy registers that completed the traditional bluegrass emotional palette. Tony Rice, Doyle Lawson, J.D. Crowe, Bobby Hicks, and Todd Phillips remained a cohesive unit across all five volumes, and the series as a whole stands as one of the more coherent and satisfying revival projects of its era.
