The Bluegrass Album, Vol. 5: Sweet Sunny South

The Bluegrass Album Band

Album · 1989 · Rounder 0240

The fifth Bluegrass Album record from Rounder was made in 1989 at Bias Recorders in Falls Church, Virginia, and issued as Rounder 0240. The series had begun in 1981 with The Bluegrass Album (Rounder 0140), and this volume changed two chairs: Vassar Clements plays fiddle in place of Bobby Hicks, and Mark Schatz plays bass in place of Todd Phillips. Tony Rice on guitar, J. D. Crowe on banjo, Doyle Lawson on mandolin and Jerry Douglas on dobro complete the group. Rice and Lawson share the lead singing, with Lawson on tenor and Crowe on baritone.

Several of the songs come from Flatt and Scruggs and from Bill Monroe. Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs wrote “Thinking About You,” and “Someone Took My Place with You” is credited to Flatt, Scruggs and Tom Gurney; Monroe wrote “On the Old Kentucky Shore” and “Along About Daybreak.” “Out in the Cold World,” “My Home’s Across the Blue Ridge Mountains” and “Sweet Sunny South” are public-domain songs. “Rock Hearts” is by Bill Otis, “Big Black Train” by Stanley Johnson and George Sherry, and “Preaching, Praying, Singing” by E. C. McCarty. “Foggy Mountain Rock” is an instrumental.

The series continued with a sixth volume, Bluegrass Instrumentals, in 1996.
