“Foggy Mountain Rock” is a Dobro instrumental written by Josh Graves while he played with Flatt and Scruggs and the Foggy Mountain Boys. The Foggy Mountain Boys recorded it in 1959.
The tune is a bluesy showpiece for the Dobro, the resonator guitar Graves did as much to bring into bluegrass as Earl Scruggs did the banjo. Its blues feel reflected the popular currents of its day, and it became one of the standard Dobro instrumentals.
The tune remains a piece resonator-guitar players learn. The version heard here is by the Bluegrass Album Band.
