The Ernest Tubb Song Folio

The Osborne Brothers

Album · 1995 · Pinecastle PRC 1039

The Ernest Tubb Song Folio, Volume 1 was released in 1995 on Pinecastle Records (PRC 1039) as the Osborne Brothers’ tribute to Ernest Tubb. It was recorded in Nashville at Suite 2000, with Sonny Osborne producing. Bobby Osborne sings lead on every song and plays mandolin, Sonny plays banjo and gitjo, and the band is Terry Eldredge on rhythm guitar, Gene Wooten on dobro, David Crow on fiddle and Terry Smith on bass, with Sonny and Eldredge singing harmony. The brothers had recorded Tubb’s “Let’s Say Goodbye Like We Said Hello” and “Walking the Floor Over You” in 1967, and the album closes with a short reprise of the latter.

The twelve songs are “There’s a Little Bit of Everything in Texas,” “Driftwood on the River,” “Rainbow at Midnight,” “Letters Have No Arms,” “Soldier’s Last Letter,” “Drivin’ Nails in My Coffin,” “I’ll Get Along Somehow,” “Are You Waiting Just for Me,” “Daisy May,” “Waltz Across Texas,” “I Will Miss You When You Go” and “Walking the Floor Over You.” Not all were written by Tubb: Floyd Tillman wrote “Daisy May,” Jerry Irby “Drivin’ Nails in My Coffin,” Lost John Miller “Rainbow at Midnight,” and John Klenner and Bob Miller “Driftwood on the River,” while “Waltz Across Texas” is credited to Talmadge Tubb.

The album includes introductions of Bobby and Sonny spoken by Tubb himself, culled from actual Opry broadcasts, along with some of Tubb’s humor at Sonny’s expense over the goatee he wore in the 1950s.
