The Famous Lefty Flynn’s (Rounder 11661-0641-2) came out on 30 March 2010. The Grascals on it included two recent arrivals, Kristin Scott Benson on banjo, who joined in January 2009, and Jeremy Abshire on fiddle, who joined in 2008. They played alongside Terry Eldredge and Jamie Johnson on guitars and vocals, Terry Smith on bass and vocals, and Danny Roberts on mandolin. The band produced the album, recorded at the Tracking Room and Gravity Entertainment in Nashville, with Steve Turner on drums.
The Grascals formed in Nashville in February 2004 and soon became Dolly Parton’s opening act and bluegrass band. They were named IBMA Entertainer of the Year in 2006 and 2007. The songs here come from several directions. Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart’s “Last Train to Clarksville” opens the album. Steve Earle’s “My Old Friend the Blues” carries steel guitar by Steve Hinson. Two songs were first recorded by the Osborne Brothers: “Son of a Sawmill Man,” by Pete Goble and Bobby Osborne, and “Up This Hill and Down.” Sonny Osborne wrote the liner notes with Jon Weisberger. Lloyd Green plays steel guitar on “Son of a Sawmill Man” and on Bill Monroe and Hank Williams’s “I’m Blue, I’m Lonesome,” where Hank Williams Jr. sings with the band.
The title song is by Jamie Johnson and Morry Trent. Johnson, Smith and Roberts wrote “My Baby’s Waiting on the Other Side,” and Roberts, Benson and Abshire wrote “Blue Rock Slide.” Harley Allen and Scotty Emerick’s “Everytime” is also here, and the album closes with the traditional “Give Me Jesus.”
