The Fiddler cover

The Fiddler (Old Homestead OHS 90052) was recorded in 1975 at Old Homestead Studios in Brighton, Michigan. It was the fourth of the albums Charlie Moore made for Old Homestead after beginning with the label in 1973. The title song is Moore’s own, and he is credited with writing “Legend of the Rebel Soldier,” “The Letter” and “You’ve Been a Friend Babe.” Other tracks include “Lonesome River,” credited to Stanley, “Brown Mountain Light,” credited to Wiseman, Aubrey Holt’s “Listen to My Hammer Ring,” and the fiddle tune “Billy in the Low Ground.”

The players on the album are Moore and Billy Constable on guitars, Ben Greene on banjo, Larry Jefferson on mandolin and tenor vocals, Johnny Dacus on fiddle and baritone vocals, and Terry Baucom as a second fiddler on several tracks; Henry Dockery plays bass on most of the album, and Virgil Shouse on “Remember Me.” On that song Lois Constable sings tenor and Larry Sparks is credited on mandolin.

“Legend of the Rebel Soldier” became Moore’s signature song. Other bluegrass bands recorded it, among them the Country Gentlemen on The Award-Winning Country Gentlemen (Rebel, 1972). Moore’s recording was later chosen for The Smithsonian Collection of Classic Country Music (1981). Old Homestead issued The Fiddler on CD in September 1996 (OHCD 90052).
