The Gospel Side of Dailey & Vincent was released on 9 January 2012 as a Cracker Barrel Old Country Store exclusive, sold in the chain’s restaurants and online and numbered Rounder 11661-9124-2. Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent produced it themselves. They had formed the duo in 2007, Dailey coming from Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and Vincent from Ricky Skaggs’s Kentucky Thunder. Vincent described the twelve songs this way: “Five are traditional bluegrass, a few are Southern Gospel, and there are a couple of contemporary Christian tracks.”
Dailey wrote the opener, “Living in the Kingdom of God,” and Vincent co-wrote “Until at Last I’m Home” with Jim Britton and Brad Price. Several songs came from country writers: Buck and Maicie Owens’s “Eternal Vacation,” Dolly Parton’s “Welcome Home” and Carl Perkins’s “Daddy Sang Bass.” The program also includes “Family Bible,” “The Fourth Man in the Fire” and the traditional “Cross Over to the Other Side of Jordan.”
The sessions took place at the Tracking Room, the Doghouse and Trinity Sound in Nashville. Vincent played bass, guitar and mandolin. The other players were Bryan Sutton on guitar, Stuart Duncan, Andy Leftwich and B. J. Cherryholmes on fiddle, Jeff Parker on mandolin, Jim Britton, Joe Dean and Scott Vestal on banjo, and Johnny Bellar on dobro. Some arrangements add piano, percussion, strings and brass. The guest harmony singers are Jimmy Fortune, Sonya Isaacs, Sharon White and Christian Davis, and on one track Vincent sings with his parents, Johnny and Carolyn Vincent.
The album reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Bluegrass Albums chart and No. 3 on its Christian albums chart. In December 2012 it was nominated for Best Bluegrass Album at the 55th Grammy Awards.
