The Rice Brothers 2, from 1989, is the second collaborative recording from Larry and Tony Rice, two siblings whose individual careers had placed them at the center of acoustic music's most adventurous decade. Larry Rice, a mandolinist and tenor singer with a warm open-throated approach, and Tony Rice, by then regarded as the most influential flatpicking guitarist of his generation, brought a relaxed intimacy to this family project that their respective main outfits rarely afforded. 'Darcy Farrow' — the John Denver and Steve Gillette composition that had become a folk standard — sits comfortably alongside the fiddle-tune barnburner 'Sawin' on the Strings,' suggesting the range the brothers commanded.
