They Called It Music is the Gibson Brothers’ 2013 album for Compass Records, made at the peak of their IBMA run — recorded largely live at Compass Sound Studios in Nashville and produced by Eric and Leigh Gibson with their longtime bassist Mike Barber. The band is the brothers with Barber, fiddler Clayton Campbell, and mandolinist Joe Walsh, and the twelve tracks split between originals and well-chosen covers, reaching from Joe Newberry’s pen to songs by Shawn Camp, Loretta Lynn, Mark Knopfler, and the Delmore Brothers. The title track, written by Eric Gibson with Newberry, won the IBMA Song of the Year award in 2013, the same year Eric was named Songwriter of the Year — the centerpiece of a record about where the music came from.
