Time and Place (self-released, 2019) is a studio album from New Zealand-born fiddler and composer George Jackson, who settled in the United States and established himself in the Chapel Hill and Nashville acoustic music community. Jackson plays fiddle throughout; Mark Kilianski plays guitar; Brad Kolodner plays banjo; Andrew Marlin of Mandolin Orange plays mandolin; and Andrew Small holds the bass. The album presents Jackson's original fiddle compositions within the old-time and bluegrass tradition, each tune reflecting the specific places and people that its title evokes. Jackson's melodic writing builds on the contest-fiddle vocabulary of the American tradition while treating each piece as a fully realized composition rather than a functional dance vehicle. Time and Place established Jackson as a distinctive compositional voice among a new generation of acoustic instrumentalists.
