Trains I Missed, released in 2010 on Mountain Home (MH 1295-2), is the second album by Balsam Range, the western North Carolina quintet of Buddy Melton (fiddle/lead vocals), Caleb Smith (guitar/vocals), Marc Pruett (banjo), Darren Nicholson (mandolin), and Tim Surrett (bass/reso/vocals). The record stacks three strong lead singers — Melton, Smith, Surrett — against contemporary-bluegrass arrangements that mix mid-tempo ballads with uptempo numbers. The Walt Wilkins / Gilles Godard / Nicole Witt title track won IBMA Song of the Year in 2011, the band's first major award and the breakout that preceded Melton's IBMA Male Vocalist win in 2014. Trains I Missed marked the moment Balsam Range moved from regional favorite to mainstream bluegrass act.
