Untold Stories is a 1987 studio album by Hot Rize, issued on Sugar Hill (SH-3756) and produced by the band. It was recorded at Colorado Sound Recording in Westminster, Colorado, with Kevin Clock engineering. The lineup is the quartet that had been together since 1978: Tim O’Brien on mandolin and fiddle, Pete Wernick on banjo, Charles Sawtelle on guitar and Nick Forster on electric bass. Jerry Douglas guests on Dobro on five of the twelve tracks.
Seven of the twelve pieces were written inside the band. O’Brien contributed the title song, “Late in the Day” and the instrumental “Bluegrass Part Three”; Wernick wrote “Just Like You” and the instrumental “Wild Ride”; and Forster wrote “Shadows in My Room” and “Don’t Make Me Believe.” The outside material comes from Hazel Dickens (“Won’t You Come & Sing for Me”), Alton and Rabon Delmore (“Life’s Too Short”) and Keith Whitley (“You Don’t Have to Move the Mountain”), plus two traditional songs.
O’Brien sings most of the leads. Forster takes the lead on the opening track, “Are You Tired of Me, My Darlin’,” and on his own “Don’t Make Me Believe,” on which O’Brien sings tenor and Wernick baritone. On “Life’s Too Short” O’Brien sings the verses and Forster leads the choruses. O’Brien switches to fiddle for “Country Blues.” The album came between Traditional Ties (1986) and Take It Home (1990).
