Untold Stories collects material from Hot Rize's archive, presenting a band that occupies a singular place in bluegrass history. Formed in Boulder, Colorado in 1978, Hot Rize brought together Tim O'Brien, Pete Wernick, Nick Forster, and Charles Sawtelle in a combination that managed to be simultaneously respectful of bluegrass tradition and genuinely creative within it. Tim O'Brien's songwriting and singing were central to the band's appeal, and his song 'Life's Too Short' exemplifies the lyrical intelligence he brought to a genre not always celebrated for its writing. Hot Rize also maintained an alter-ego country act, Red Knuckles and the Trailblazers, which demonstrated the musicians' range and humor.
