Vassar Clements, Tony Rice and the Low Country All-Star Band

Vassar Clements

Album · 2006 · Flatt Mountain FMR 001

Vassar Clements, Tony Rice and the Low Country All-Star Band (Flatt Mountain Records FMR 001, 2006) is a live recording of one of Clements' final performances, captured in December 2004 and released in 2006 — Clements died in August 2005. Clements plays fiddle; Rice plays guitar and sings; Tony Williamson plays mandolin and sings; Carroll Clements plays banjo; Warren Amberson plays guitar and sings lead; and Scott Vestal completes the ensemble. The album documents an uninhibited performance across bluegrass standards and Monroe-associated material — described by reviewers as "floor-shaking" music — presenting Clements' fiddle in the late-career improvisational mode that made his live performances the standard by which acoustic fiddlers measured expressive freedom. The recording was produced by Randy Wood specifically for this release.
