Versatile Flatt and Scruggs: Pickin', Strummin' and Singin', released by Columbia in 1965 (CL 9154), was the duo's bid to show range — twelve tracks recorded across two sessions at Columbia's Nashville studio in December 1964 and February 1965, with the regular Foggy Mountain Boys lineup of Paul Warren on fiddle, Josh Graves on dobro, and Jake Tullock on bass joined by Nashville session player Charlie McCoy on harmonica. The program moved between straight-ahead bluegrass, folk-revival selections, and lighter country material, reflecting the broader audience Columbia kept pushing Flatt and Scruggs toward in the mid-1960s. It would prove a transitional record — by 1969 the same commercial pressure would split the partnership apart.
