Vintage and Unique was released on 21 June 2011 on Corvus Records (CR 018). It is the fifth album by John Reischman and the Jaybirds: Reischman on mandolin, Jim Nunally on guitar, Nick Hornbuckle on banjo, Greg Spatz on fiddle and Trisha Gagnon on bass, with Gagnon and Nunally sharing most of the lead singing. Nunally and Reischman produced it, and Nunally recorded, mixed and mastered it.
The fourteen tracks pair traditional material, including “Shady Grove” and “The Girl I Left Behind,” with pieces written by the band’s members: Spatz wrote “Lancaster Sound,” Gagnon “Gold Mountain (Gam Saan),” Nunally “Consider Me Gone,” Hornbuckle “The Black Road,” and Reischman “The Old Grove.” Nunally and Gagnon harmonize on “Hurry Up and Harvest.” “Last Chance,” “Lancaster Sound” and “Bitterroot Waltz” are instrumentals.
“Gold Mountain” grew out of the Jaybirds’ collaborations with Red Chamber, another Vancouver ensemble, which plays music from the Tang Dynasty and other styles on ancient Chinese instruments. Mei Han plays guzheng on the track.
