Vintage and Unique, released in 2011 on Corvus (CR 018), is John Reischman and the Jaybirds' most wide-ranging effort, with eight of fourteen tracks band-written originals paired with reinventions of "Shady Grove," "Last Chance," and Bill Monroe's "The First Whippoorwill." The lineup is the same Vancouver-based quintet — Reischman on mandolin, Trisha Gagnon on bass and vocals, Nick Hornbuckle on banjo, Jim Nunally on guitar and vocals, Greg Spatz on fiddle. The standout original "Cold Mountain (Cam Saan)" memorialized Chinese laborers who built the Canadian Pacific Railway, an explicitly Canadian historical subject rare in bluegrass repertoire. The record sits midway through the Jaybirds' decade-long run and is the band's most ambitious writing statement.
