Walls of Time

The Johnson Mountain Boys

Album · 1982 · Rounder 0160

Walls of Time (Rounder 0160) was released on 15 June 1982 and was the Johnson Mountain Boys’ second album for Rounder, after their self-titled LP for the label. The band, from the Washington, D.C., area, was recorded at Bias Recording Company in Springfield, Virginia, over sessions on 2 June, 2 July and 9 July 1981.

The lineup is the one that had settled by 1981: Dudley Connell on guitar and lead vocals, David McLaughlin on mandolin, who had rejoined the band full time that year, Eddie Stubbs on fiddle, Richard Underwood on banjo and Larry Robbins on bass. Connell wrote five of the twelve tracks, including “Too Late to Say Goodbye,” “Mother’s Voice Is in the Wind” and “Weathered Gray Stone,” and Underwood wrote the instrumental “The Johnson Mountain Chimes.” The title song is “The Walls of Time,” written by Bill Monroe and Peter Rowan. Other songs are Pee Wee Lambert’s “Weary Hobo,” the A. P. Carter song “Just Another Broken Heart,” and Don Reno’s “I Want to Live Like Christ, My Saviour.” The Johnson Mountain Boys were inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2020.
