Weary River was released in December 2015 on Patuxent Music (CD 270). Danny Paisley sings lead and plays guitar, with Ryan Paisley, his son, who was fifteen at the time of the recording, on mandolin; Mark Delaney on banjo; T.J. Lundy on fiddle; and Eric Troutman on bass and vocals. Lundy had recently returned to the band. He is a son of Ted Lundy, who led the Southern Mountain Boys with Bob Paisley, Danny’s father; after Bob Paisley’s death in 2004 the group took the name Danny Paisley and the Southern Grass.
There are thirteen tracks. Doug Meek adds fiddle on seven of them, Russ Hooper plays Dobro on four, and Tom Mindte sings baritone on “Somewhere Between.” Paisley said it was the first time he had used a Dobro on one of the band’s albums, and that he meant the record as a tribute to forty years of playing bluegrass.
The program mixes older songs, a couple of new ones and numbers from his father’s catalog. “Uncle Ned” and the Merle Haggard song “Somewhere Between” both appear on Bob Paisley’s 1994 CD Back to the Blue Ridge, and Marty Robbins’s “Mother Knows Best” comes from an August 1972 Ted Lundy and the Southern Mountain Boys LP. “Darling Nellie Across the Sea” is an A.P. Carter song, “The Letter Edged in Black” is a nineteenth-century song, the title song is by Chris Stuart, and Lundy features on the old-time tune “Grey Eagle.”
