Weep Little Willow

Larry Stephenson Band

Album · 2016 · Whysper Dream Music

Weep Little Willow is a 2016 album by the Larry Stephenson Band on Stephenson’s own Whysper Dream Music, released on 14 October 2016. It was the group’s third album for the label. Ben Surratt was co-producer. Stephenson plays mandolin and sings lead, Kevin Richardson plays guitar, Kenny Ingram banjo and Matt Wright bass, with Richardson and Wright on harmony vocals; Aubrey Haynie is a guest on fiddle.

Its twelve tracks mix recent songs with older ones. “Yesterday’s Gone,” the opener, was written and first recorded by the British duo Chad & Jeremy and was recorded by the Osborne Brothers in 1965. The Delmore Brothers’ “Midnight Train,” Mac Wiseman’s “Free Me from This Old Chain Gang,” Bill Anderson’s “Nail My Shoes to the Floor” and Bill Monroe’s “Kentucky Waltz” come from earlier writers. The title song is by Donna Ulisse and Rick Stanley, about a young girl living on the streets and the stranger who helps her. “Ruby’s Purse,” by Jerry Salley and Suzanne Mumpower Johnson, is a tribute to a grandmother’s purse.
