When I’m Free (Ten in Hand Records, 2014) was Hot Rize’s first studio album in 24 years and the first to feature Bryan Sutton, who joined on guitar after the death of Charles Sawtelle. Tim O’Brien plays mandolin and fiddle, Pete Wernick banjo and Nick Forster electric bass. The band produced the album, and it was recorded at The Studio at eTown Hall in Boulder, Colorado.

The twelve tracks mix new songs by the band with a few from outside. O’Brien wrote “Blue Is Fallin’” and “You Were on My Mind This Morning,” co-wrote “Western Skies” with Forster, and co-wrote “Clary Mac” with Harley Allen. Forster and Wernick wrote “Come Away,” Wernick wrote “Sky Rider,” and Sutton and Forster wrote “I Am the Road,” which Sutton sings. The covers are Mark Knopfler’s “I Never Met a One Like You” and “Burn It Down” by David Hidalgo and Louis Perez, and the album includes two traditional pieces, “A Cowboy’s Life” and the instrumental “Glory in the Meeting House.”

O’Brien sings lead on most of the songs with Forster on tenor; Forster takes the lead on “Doggone” and “Burn It Down.”
