“Glory in the Meeting House” is an old fiddle tune from the Kentucky River country. It was a signature piece of the Hazard County fiddler Luther Strong, who recorded it for the Library of Congress in 1937; Strong said he had won a five-hundred-dollar contest prize with the tune.
A dark, driving piece played in E minor with the fiddle tuned down, it carries the fierce, unsettled edge of old Kentucky fiddling. It belongs to the contest-tune tradition, built to stir a crowd and win a competition.
