When the Storm Is Over, the third New Grass Revival studio album, was released by Flying Fish in 1977 with the original lineup of Sam Bush, John Cowan, Curtis Burch, and Courtney Johnson still in place. The program mixes traditional material — Tennessee Wagoner, the band's signature take on White Freightliner Blues — with band-penned songs that range from bluegrass through contemporary singer-songwriter territory. By this point New Grass Revival had become the band that defined how far bluegrass instrumentation could be pushed without breaking, and the album extends the working language established on Fly Through the Country two years earlier. It would be reissued alongside that earlier record on a double-album CD in 1992.
