“Tennessee Wagoner” is a traditional American old-time fiddle tune, widely played across the South and Midwest and documented on records since the 1920s. It belongs to a family of related “Wagoner” tunes, with regional cousins known as “Georgia Wagoner” and “Texas Wagoner.”
The tune is a two-strain reel, a brisk breakdown of the kind that fueled square dances and fiddlers’ contests. It is a long-established standard of the old-time repertoire, the sort of tune nearly every fiddler in the tradition has crossed paths with.
This recording features New Grass Revival, the progressive bluegrass band of Sam Bush, Curtis Burch, John Cowan, and Courtney Johnson, and appears on the album “When the Storm Is Over.”
