Becky Isaacs Bowman
Becky Isaacs Bowman is the guitarist and one of the singers of the Isaacs, the gospel and bluegrass family band started by her parents, Joe and Lily Isaacs, and she has performed with it since her teens. She is also a songwriter, and her first solo album, Songs That Pulled Me Through the Tough Times, was nominated for the Grammy for Best Roots Gospel Album.
The youngest of Joe and Lily Isaacs’s three children, she was born on 2 August 1975 and joined the family band, with her brother Ben and her sister Sonya, as a teenager. She began writing songs in those years. Her first number one was “Stand Still,” which the Southern Gospel Music Awards named Song of the Year in 2002, and with Sonya she wrote “Heroes,” a Dove Award winner as Bluegrass Song of the Year, as well as “Waiting in the Water,” “Your Cries Have Awoken the Master” and “A Miracle Today.” She has sung background vocals for artists including Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Don Williams, Alabama, Trace Adkins, Russ Taff and Paul Simon. Her husband, the singer and minister John Bowman, has worked with the Isaacs as an instrumentalist and songwriter.
The Isaacs were invited to join the Grand Ole Opry on 10 August 2021, and that year the group was also inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
In December 2022, after four decades of performing, she released the first single from her solo project, Albert E. Brumley’s “I’ll Meet You in the Morning,” with Del McCoury singing lead, Dailey & Vincent and Rhonda Vincent on the harmonies and Bill Gaither singing bass. The album, which she produced with her brother Ben, brought in a long list of guests: Dolly Parton on Parton’s own “Early Morning Breeze,” Ricky Skaggs on her father’s “Family Chain,” the Whites on “God Leads His Dear Children Along,” Alison Krauss and John Bowman on “Where We’ll Never Grow Old,” and Connie Smith and Marty Stuart on “Way Up on the Mountain,” with the guitarist Jimmy Capps on several tracks. It entered the Billboard bluegrass chart at number four.
