Don Flemons
Dom Flemons, “The American Songster,” is a Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist and song collector whose repertoire spans more than a century of American folk, ballad, and blues traditions. A co-founder of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, he has built a solo career recovering overlooked corners of Black string-band and frontier music.
- Born August 30, 1982, in Phoenix, Arizona; plays banjo, guitar, harmonica, rhythm bones, and quills.
- Co-founded the Carolina Chocolate Drops in 2005.
- Won the 2011 Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Album with the Chocolate Drops for Genuine Negro Jig.
- Released the Grammy-nominated solo album Black Cowboys (2018, Smithsonian Folkways).
- Followed with the Grammy-nominated Traveling Wildfire (2023, Smithsonian Folkways).
- Inducted into the American Banjo Museum Hall of Fame in 2025.
