He taught Jamie to sing, and the two sang duets from the time the boy was old enough to remember the words, mostly old bluegrass and gospel songs. Jamie went on to work with Doyle Lawson and then to found Dailey & Vincent with Darrin Vincent. A couple of years before the album, J.B. joined Dailey & Vincent on stage for a sold-out show at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, and that appearance led father and son to record together.

Pinecastle released Step Back in Time on 8 May 2020. J.B. sings lead on every vocal track, with Jamie singing tenor and Darrin Vincent the baritone part, and Jimmy Fortune joins them on one song. Jamie produced the album and played guitar on it, with Charlie Cushman on banjo, Tristin Scroggins on mandolin, Patrick McAvinue on fiddle and Vincent on bass. The thirteen tracks include “Nobody’s Darlin’ But Mine,” the first single, and “Will the Angels Play Their Harps for Me,” the second, and the album entered the Billboard Bluegrass Albums chart at No. 3 in its first week.
