Before joining the Special Consensus he spent 1995 to 2000 with the bluegrass gospel band the New Tradition. In 2001 he took over the guitar in the Special Consensus from Chris Walz, joining the banjo player and founder Greg Cahill, the mandolin player Josh Williams and the bassist Tim Dishman.

Route 10 (Pinecastle, 2002) was recorded at Le Garage Studio in Nashville by that lineup, with Ron Stewart on fiddle and Rob Ickes on resonator guitar. Clifton sang lead on “If I Could Only Have Your Love,” “Bobby and Sarah” and Claire Lynch’s “Come Unto Me,” the last a gospel quartet with Williams, Dishman and Cahill, and sang harmony behind Williams on most of the rest, among them Michael Martin Murphey’s “Carolina in the Pines.” He also wrote “Amy and Trevor,” a song about a man who loses his family after driving under the influence.
