Ketch Secor met him in Bar Harbor, Maine, where Hayes was raking blueberries and Secor was playing banjo on the street in front of a jewelry store. Hayes was among the musicians that Secor, Critter Fuqua and Willie Watson gathered around Ithaca, New York, in the late 1990s, and he played on the band’s first tape, Trans:mission, a ten-song cassette. He played guitjo and sang with the band for more than two decades, and he is credited with guitjo and vocals on its 2012 album Carry Me Back. The Grand Ole Opry inducted Old Crow Medicine Show as members on 17 September 2013, and Remedy, released in 2014, won the Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2015.
