Molly Skaggs
Molly Skaggs is a singer and multi-instrumentalist, the daughter of Ricky Skaggs and Sharon White, who has sung and played banjo, dulcimer, autoharp and keyboards on her family’s records since 2002 and has worked in Christian worship music. Her debut album, Overtaken, was issued on her father’s label, Skaggs Family Records.
Her first credit is on Christmas Grass (Audium, 2002), a bluegrass Christmas collection, where she plays drop-thumb banjo on “Christmas Time’s A-Coming.” On A Skaggs Family Christmas (2005) she sang lead and played dulcimer on “Little Drummer Boy” and “Love Came Gently,” sang harmony on “What Child Is This?” and joined a trio on “Go Thee Down.” The same year she played clawhammer banjo on two tracks of Heather Berry’s To a Dove. She played autoharp on one track of Salt of the Earth (2007), the gospel album her father made with the Whites, and on his Mosaic (2010) she sang lead on “I’m Awake Now” and backing vocals on “My Cup Runneth Over.” The second Skaggs Family Christmas (2011) has her on piano and vocals, with her own lead and harmony on “Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel.”
Outside the family she played accordion and banjo and sang backing vocals on Songs of Water’s The Sea Has Spoken (2010), and she has worked in worship music: she is credited as a writer of two songs on Cageless Bird’s Live at Home (2014) and as keyboard player and co-writer of two songs on Bethel Music’s Moments: Mighty Sound (2018). Overtaken, released as by Molly Kate Skaggs, ranges from singer-songwriter ballads to worship songs and instrumentals, with her parents among the friends and family who played on it.
