- Born Marion Try Slaughter on April 6, 1883, in Jefferson, Texas; died on September 14, 1948.
- His 1924 Victor recording of “The Wreck of the Old 97” backed with “The Prisoner's Song” is widely regarded as the first million-selling country record.
- Was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1981.
