“I’ll Meet You in the Morning” is a gospel song written by Albert E. Brumley, the Oklahoma-born songwriter who was among the most successful gospel composers of the twentieth century — the man behind “I’ll Fly Away,” “Turn Your Radio On,” and hundreds of other songs. He wrote this one in the 1930s.
The song is a classic of the gospel “heaven reunion” type. Its lyric looks past death to a joyful meeting in the morning by the bright riverside, where loved ones separated on earth will be reunited and all sorrow will have passed. That comforting vision made it a fixture of church singing and funerals alike.
The song was recorded within a few years of its writing and spread quickly through Southern gospel and, in time, bluegrass. The version heard here is by Bill Monroe and his Blue Grass Boys, from the 1958 sacred album “I Saw the Light.”
