2nd Generation Bluegrass (Rebel Records SLP 1504) is a studio album from Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, recorded at a formative moment in the Stanley band's history when the ensemble included two of bluegrass's greatest future stars in their earliest professional phase. Keith Whitley plays guitar and sings lead; Ricky Skaggs plays mandolin and fiddle and sings; Roy Lee Centers plays guitar and sings; Ray "Curly Ray" Cline plays fiddle; and Jack Cooke holds the bass. Whitley and Skaggs — teenagers at the time of recording — brought a vocal authority and musical sophistication that astonished veteran listeners, and their work with Stanley on this album launched two careers that would each reshape the course of traditional country and bluegrass music in the decades that followed.
