40th Anniversary Bash: An All-Star Night of Live Bluegrass was released on Ten in Hand Records on 3 August 2018. Hot Rize had first performed on 18 January 1978, and forty years later the band marked the anniversary with three sold-out shows at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado, its long-time home base. The album was recorded at those shows on 12–14 January 2018.

On stage were Tim O’Brien on mandolin and fiddle, Pete Wernick on banjo, Nick Forster on electric bass and Bryan Sutton on guitar. The original guitarist, Charles Sawtelle, died in 1999, and Sutton joined when the band regrouped in 2002. Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas and Stuart Duncan were the guests. Hot Rize produced the album, and Forster, Sutton and Brandon Bell mixed it at Southern Ground Studios in Nashville.

Several of the nineteen songs have short spoken introductions, and they reach back across the band’s history. Songs by band members include O’Brien’s “Nellie Kane,” “Walk the Way the Wind Blows” and “Hard Pressed,” Wernick’s “Just Like You” and the instrumental “Huckling the Berries,” Forster and O’Brien’s “Western Skies,” and Sutton and Forster’s “I Am the Road.” “Colleen Malone,” by Johnny Goble and Leroy Drumm, won the IBMA’s Song of the Year after Hot Rize recorded it on Take It Home. “Radio Boogie” shares its title with the band’s 1981 album. Other songs come from Don Stover (“Things in Life”), Pete Kuykendall (“Out on the Ocean”), Ola Belle Reed and Alex Campbell (“High on a Mountain”), Jimmy Webb (“Wichita Lineman”), and David Hidalgo and Louis Perez (“Burn It Down”). The album closes with “Angelina Baker,” a traditional tune in Stuart Duncan’s arrangement.
