Acapella Hymnal is a 2017 album of unaccompanied hymns and gospel songs by Don Rigsby, issued on 9Lives Records (9LR 17108). It has fourteen tracks, all recorded at 2 Cat Studios in Ashland, Kentucky, and the Bluegrass Discography lists Rigsby’s voice alone on every one. The program opens with “Letter from My Father” and takes in “Pass Me Not,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” “How Great Thou Art,” “I’ll Fly Away,” “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” and “Precious Memories,” with a setting of Psalm 23 that runs under a minute.

Rigsby, from Isonville, Kentucky, is a mandolinist and singer who spent six years with the Lonesome River Band and was a member of Longview with Dudley Connell and James King. Gospel was the subject of his first solo album, A Vision, which won the Association of Independent Music’s Gospel Album of the Year award; the Bluegrass Now readers’ poll named him Vocal Tenor of the Year in 1999. Acapella Hymnal followed his 2016 album New Territory, made with David Thom for the same label.
