Across the Miles (New Haven Records 84418-7509-2) was released in May 1994, three years after Russell Moore, with Mike Hartgrove and Ray Deaton, left Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver and started IIIrd Tyme Out with Terry Baucom and Alan Bibey. On this record Moore plays guitar, Steve Dilling banjo and guitar, Wayne Benson mandolin, Hartgrove fiddle and Deaton bass, with John Catchings on cello and Kenny Malone and Pat McInerney on percussion. Moore, Deaton, Dilling and Benson are the credited singers on all ten tracks, and Bil Vorndick produced with the band.

The program is made up of gospel titles, among them “Giving My Soul Back to Him,” “I Want to Stroll Over Heaven,” “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and the title song. Eight of the ten titles were recorded again for Living on the Other Side, the band’s 1996 Rounder album, where “Across the Miles” is credited to Karen Staley.

The album came out in the first of seven consecutive years, 1994 to 2000, in which IIIrd Tyme Out won the IBMA Vocal Group of the Year award.
