Act 1, the Seldom Scene's debut album originally released in 1972, introduced one of the most critically admired progressive bluegrass groups to emerge from the Washington area. The band formed around John Duffey's distinctive mandolin playing and stratospheric tenor, alongside Ben Eldridge on banjo, Mike Auldridge on Dobro, Tom Gray on bass, and John Starling on guitar and lead vocals. The Scene's choice of material set them apart immediately: folk songs, country pop, James Taylor's 'Sweet Baby James,' and folk-era standards alongside more conventional bluegrass fare. Act 1 documents a band that understood bluegrass as a living instrumental and vocal format rather than a fixed museum piece.
