AJ Lee (2017) is the self-titled six-song album from the Santa Cruz–area mandolinist and singer AJ Lee, recorded before her band AJ Lee & Blue Summit began releasing records. Produced by guitarist Jon Abrams, it sets Lee's voice against a roots-rock band — Dave Zirbel on pedal steel, banjo, and dobro, Marc Doten on bass and keyboards, and brothers Paul and Anthony Lacques on electric guitar and drums.
The set is built from well-chosen covers: Gillian Welch and David Rawlings's “Look at Miss Ohio,” Gram Parsons's “Hickory Wind,” Dallas Frazier's “California Cotton Fields,” Bob Dylan's “Tomorrow Is a Long Time,” the Doris Payne–Gregory Carroll soul number “Just One Look,” and Herb Pedersen's “Wait a Minute,” the last with harmony vocals from Molly Tuttle and Angelica Grim.
