Been All Around This World was released by Acoustic Disc (ACD-57) in April 2004 and produced by David Grisman. It draws on more than forty informal recording sessions that Jerry Garcia and Grisman began nearly twenty years after Old & In the Way, with the David Grisman Quintet as the backup band; the tracks were made at Dawg Studios. “Blue Yodel #9,” with Sally Van Meter on dobro, was taken from Garcia’s final recording session.

Garcia sings lead and plays guitar throughout, with Grisman on mandolin (mandola on “Sittin’ Here in Limbo”). Jim Kerwin plays bass on most tracks, Joe Craven plays fiddle and percussion, and the other credited players are John Kahn (bass) and George Marsh (drums) on “Blue Yodel #9,” and Matt Eakle (flute) on “Handsome Cabin Boy Waltz” and “Nine Pound Hammer.” Grisman sings tenor on “I’m Troubled” and “I Ain’t Never,” and baritone on “Drink Up and Go Home,” where Craven sings tenor.

The twelve songs range widely: the traditional title song and “Handsome Cabin Boy Waltz,” James Brown’s “I’ll Go Crazy,” George Jones and Leon Payne’s “Take Me,” Bob Dylan’s “The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest,” Jimmie Rodgers’ “Blue Yodel #9,” Merle Travis’s “Nine Pound Hammer” and “Dark as a Dungeon,” and Freddie Hart’s “Drink Up and Go Home.”
