I’m Troubled

The Blue Sky Boys, the North Carolina brothers Bill and Earl Bolick, recorded it on 16 June 1936 in Charlotte, at their first session for Victor’s Bluebird label. Earl sang lead and played guitar; Bill sang tenor and played mandolin. Bluebird issued it as “I’m Troubled, I’m Troubled” on B-6538 on 16 September 1936, paired with “There’ll Come a Time,” and Victor’s files also give it the alternate title “I’m Going to Georgia.” They recorded it again with Curly Parker on fiddle, and that later performance appeared on Copper Creek’s 1994 CD Farm and Fun Time Favorites, Vol. 1.

Doc Watson sang it on The Watson Family, the album of field recordings Ralph Rinzler and others made between 1960 and 1965 and Folkways issued in 1963 (FA 2366), with Doc on guitar and Arnold Watson on harmonica. Harry and Jeanie West recorded it for the 1958 Esoteric LP Smokey Mountain Ballads, and the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band included it on Almost Acoustic (1988). Dudley Connell and Don Rigsby sang it on Meet Me by the Moonlight (Sugar Hill, 2000), and the Gibson Brothers recorded it on Brotherhood (Rounder, 2015).
