Brotherhood (Rounder 35986) was released on 24 February 2015, the first project by the Gibson Brothers for Rounder Records. It is an album of covers built around the brother duet acts that shaped Eric and Leigh Gibson, and the first of their albums to include none of their own songs. The title refers to that idea.
Leigh Gibson plays guitar and Eric Gibson banjo, with their touring band of Jesse Brock on mandolin, Clayton Campbell on fiddle and Mike Barber on bass. Russ Pahl plays pedal steel guitar on every track, and Sam Zucchini plays drums on three. Ronnie Reno sings on “Each Season Changes You” and “How Mountain Girls Can Love,” and Rob and Ronnie McCoury guest on “What a Wonderful Savior Is He.” Eric Gibson, Leigh Gibson and Mike Barber produced the album, and Ben Surratt recorded and mixed it at The Rec Room.
The fifteen songs open and close with the Everly Brothers, “Bye Bye Love” and “Crying in the Rain.” In between are “The Sweetest Gift” from the repertoire of the Blue Sky Boys, “An Angel with Blue Eyes” from the Church Brothers, the Osborne Brothers’ “Each Season Changes You,” the Stanley Brothers’ “How Mountain Girls Can Love,” Jim & Jesse’s “Sweet Little Miss Blue Eyes” and “It’ll Be Her,” recorded in the early 1980s by Tompall and the Glaser Brothers. The acts the Gibsons named as influences also include the Monroe Brothers and the Louvin Brothers.
