Some Strange Country, released in May 2010 on Signature Sounds (SIG 2029), is Crooked Still's fourth and final studio album before a three-year hiatus. Aoife O'Donovan sings lead over an unusual chamber-bluegrass configuration: Gregory Liszt on banjo, Tristan Clarridge on cello, Brittany Haas on fiddle and harmony, and Corey DiMario on upright bass — no guitar. Gary Paczosa produced, with guest spots from Ricky Skaggs, Tim O'Brien, and Sarah Jarosz. The repertoire mixes traditional ballads with originals built on the same low-end cello-driven foundation that defined the band's sound. After a 2011 tour and a Friends of Fall EP, the group went on hiatus so members could pursue solo work — most consequentially O'Donovan, whose solo career took off shortly after.
