Between the Hollow and the High-Rise was released in 2010 on Live Oak Records. Kathy Kallick sings and plays guitar, and she produced the album with Tom Size, who also engineered it. Tom Bekeny plays mandolin, Annie Staninec fiddle, Greg Booth dobro and banjo, and Dan Booth bass; all five take vocals.

Six of the fourteen tracks are Kallick originals. The covers include Carter Stanley’s “Lonesome Night,” Josh Graves’s “Come Walk With Me” and the Louvin Brothers’ “There’s a Higher Power,” and Greg Booth adapts the Bob Wills instrumental “Panhandle Rag” for dobro. “New White House Blues” is an update of the old “White House Blues.” The album opens with “Where Is My Little Cabin Home,” a lament sung from the point of view of a city dweller with no old homeplace to go back to; the title of the album points to a theme that recurs in Kallick’s own songs.

Kallick began performing in Chicago folk circles, singing harmony with her mother, and came to bluegrass in San Francisco. The all-women Good Ol’ Persons, one of the first bluegrass bands of its kind, began with her in 1975 and ran for twenty years; she formed the Kathy Kallick Band in 1996.
