Between the Hollow and the High-Rise offers the Kathy Kallick Band's meditation on the distance between the rural world that gave birth to bluegrass and the urban environments where so much of the music's contemporary audience lives. Kallick, a Bay Area singer, songwriter, and guitarist who came of age in the California bluegrass and old-time scene of the 1970s, has spent a career navigating that distance. The 2010 album represents mature work from an artist who had by that point spent decades developing an ensemble and compositional approach distinctively her own within the broader acoustic music community.
