Bill Monroe and Friends (MCA Records MCA-5435, 1984) is a guest-collaboration studio album recorded with Monroe's working Blue Grass Boys and featuring a different Nashville country star as co-vocalist on each track. Monroe plays mandolin and sings high tenor throughout; Wayne Lewis plays guitar; Blake Williams plays banjo; Kenny Baker and Buddy Spicher play fiddle across the sessions; Mark Hembree holds the bass; and John Hartford contributes banjo and vocals on his featured track. Guests include Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Ricky Skaggs, and others, each joining Monroe on a composition or traditional piece in a format that demonstrated both Monroe's enduring stature within Nashville and his willingness to bridge his bluegrass tradition with the larger country music world that had grown up in its wake.
