Bluegrass on My Mind was recorded in June 1972 at Starday Studios in Nashville and issued by Starday that year as SLP-481. It is a Don Reno and Bill Harrell record with the Tennessee Cut-Ups, the pairing that began in 1964, after Red Smiley retired, when Reno and Harrell went out as Reno & Harrell. Hal Neely produced, and Tom Reeder wrote the liner notes.
Reno plays banjo and sings tenor, and Harrell plays guitar and takes the lead vocals. Ronnie Reno is on mandolin, Buck Ryan on fiddle and Ellis Padgett on bass. Eddie Adcock adds a second banjo on several tracks, and Wendy Thatcher and Gordon Terry sing harmony on “1500 Miles Away from Home,” “Sweet Miss Sarah Jane” and “I’ll Fly Away.”
Reno wrote the title song, “Don’t You Know I Love You Charlie Brown,” “Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire,” “A Gift of Love” and “I Couldn’t Win,” and he shares credit with Bill Monroe on “I’m Afraid My Darlin’s Gone.” Three tracks are instrumentals: “Down Yonder,” Bob Wills’s “Maiden’s Prayer,” and “Bye Bye Blues,” arranged by Reno. The Brumley gospel song “I’ll Fly Away” is sung by Harrell with Reno on tenor and Thatcher and Terry on the other parts.
