Bluegrass! by The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers, recorded for Starday in 1962, captures a band that had been central to the development of bluegrass in the coalfields of southwestern Virginia and eastern Kentucky since the late 1940s. The group went through numerous personnel changes over the years, with Ezra Cline as the anchor, and by this recording featured a lineup well-seasoned in the hard-driving mountain style. The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers were among the earliest acts to broadcast bluegrass on radio, and their recordings document a regional variant of the form — slightly rougher and more embedded in old-time tradition than the polished sounds coming out of Nashville. This album preserves their mature sound and serves as an important document of mid-century Appalachian bluegrass.
