The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers

Album · 1962 · Starday SLP 194

Bluegrass! (Starday SLP 194) was recorded in May 1962 at Starday Sound Studio in Madison, Tennessee, and released that September. The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers on the record are Melvin Goins on guitar, Ray Goins on banjo, Curly Ray Cline on fiddle and Ezra Cline on bass, with the Goins brothers and Cline singing. Of its fourteen tracks, Bill Monroe is credited with “Uncle Pen,” “Blue Moon of Kentucky” and “Kentucky Waltz”; “Lonesome Pine Hill,” “Fly on the Baby’s Nose,” “Drinking Black Coffee” and “I Walked to the River” are credited to Cline and Goins, and “Pickin’ the Banjo” is a Curly Ray Cline instrumental. “Dirty Dishes Blues,” credited to Cline, had been recorded for RCA Victor in the early 1950s.

Ezra Cline organized the band in 1938 at Bluefield, West Virginia, with his cousins Ireland “Lazy Ned” and Ray “Curly Ray” Cline, and it worked on WHIS radio there. Bobby Osborne and Larry Richardson joined in 1949, and the group moved to Pikeville, Kentucky, in 1953. Melvin and Ray Goins returned for several years in the early and middle 1960s, a stretch in which the band cut four albums for Starday and spent fifteen months on WCYB-TV in Bristol, Virginia; the lineup broke up in 1964. The Lonesome Pine Fiddlers were inducted into the IBMA Hall of Fame in 2009.
