"Bob Dylan," released in March 1962 on Columbia Records, is Dylan's debut album, produced by John H. Hammond. Almost entirely composed of traditional folk and blues covers — drawing on material associated with Blind Lemon Jefferson, Bukka White, and Woody Guthrie — the record includes only two original compositions: "Talkin' New York" and "Song to Woody." Hammond signed the twenty-year-old Dylan over considerable internal skepticism; Columbia staffers reportedly called the project "Hammond's Folly." The album sold poorly on initial release but became a touchstone as Dylan's career grew, and its deep immersion in pre-war rural American music established the folk-revival credentials he would spend the next two years simultaneously expanding and subverting.
