Breaks to the Edge was released on Mountain Home Music Company (MH 18262) on 10 January 2020. Mountain Home called it Sideline’s fifth studio album. The line-up on the record is Steve Dilling (banjo, vocals), Jason Moore (bass, vocals), Skip Cherryholmes (guitar, vocals), Troy Boone (mandolin, vocals), Daniel Greeson (fiddle) and Bailey Coe (vocals), with Aaron Ramsey credited on mandolin. It was recorded at Crossroads Studios in Arden, North Carolina, and Van Atkins is credited as engineer, mixer and mastering engineer. It followed Front and Center (2018), whose single “Thunder Dan” won the IBMA’s Song of the Year in 2019.
The twelve tracks run from fast pieces such as “Digging My Own Grave” and “Roll On Blues,” both led by Coe’s high lead vocal, to Steve Wariner’s “Crash Course in the Blues,” with Cherryholmes singing lead, and “Amy,” on which Boone sings lead and plays mandolin. “Roll On Blues” is credited to Connie Gately. “Return to Windy Mountain,” written by Carl Jackson and Delnora Lynn Reed, was the radio single, “I’ll Live Again” is a southern gospel song sung in four-part harmony, and “Down in the Willow Garden,” a traditional tragedy ballad, closes the album.
