Carrying the Tradition was released by the Lonesome River Band on Rebel in 1991 (REB-CD 1690). It was recorded at Doobie Shea Studios in Ferrum, Virginia, with Tim Austin on guitar, Sammy Shelor on banjo, Dan Tyminski on mandolin and Ronnie Bowman on bass. Tyminski and Bowman share the lead vocals. Bowman leads “I Can’t Get You Off My Mind,” “You Gotta Do What You Gotta Do,” “Cabin of Love,” “Hobo Blues,” “I’m Coming Back (but I Don’t Know When)” and “Counting the Days,” while Tyminski leads “Heartless Love,” “Listen to the Word of God,” “The Game Is Over,” “Money in the Bank,” “Fireball Mail” and “My Sweet Blue-Eyed Darlin’.” On “Sitting on Top of the World” Bowman sings the first verse and Tyminski the rest.

The fiddle parts are played by guests: Alison Krauss on most of the tracks, Bobby Hicks on two, and Steve Thomas on “Cabin of Love.” Kim Gardner adds dobro on several. Songwriting credits include Birch Monroe for “Cabin of Love,” Charlie Monroe for “I’m Coming Back,” Fred Rose for “Fireball Mail” and Bill Monroe for “My Sweet Blue-Eyed Darlin’”; “Money in the Bank” was written by Tyminski and Tim Stafford.
