“Fireball Mail” is credited on its 1942 OKeh release to Floyd Jenkins, but Floyd Jenkins was a publishing pseudonym for Fred Rose — the Nashville songwriter and Acuff–Rose co-founder. Roy Acuff and his Smoky Mountain Boys recorded the song in 1942 on OKeh 6685, backed with “Wreck on the Highway,” and the Acuff reading remains the reference point for everything that came after.
The piece sits inside a small constellation of mid-century train songs — alongside “Orange Blossom Special” and the Wreck-of-the-Old-97 narrative tradition — that translate the rhythm and motion of a steam train into a vocal-and-fiddle showpiece. The lyric tracks the eponymous Fireball Mail headed Dallas-bound, with verses that catalogue speed, coal, and steam in the unselfconscious romance-of-rail mode characteristic of pre-1950s country writing.
The Lonesome River Band’s recording dates from the band’s early-1990s peak with Dan Tyminski on lead vocal and Sammy Shelor driving the banjo. Their hard-driving contemporary-traditional arrangement exemplifies the song’s natural fit in bluegrass: a showcase for both the banjo and fiddle and a guaranteed crowd-mover at live sets.
