Celebrating 50 Years of Del McCoury, released in 2009, marks a half-century of performing for one of bluegrass music's most enduring and beloved figures. Del McCoury, who had been playing professionally since the late 1950s when he joined Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys, assembled a career distinguished by stylistic consistency and vocal excellence. The Del McCoury Band, anchored by his sons Ronnie on mandolin and Rob on banjo, became one of the most tight-knit family units in the music's history. The album acknowledges McCoury's rare achievement: maintaining the highest standards of hard-core traditional bluegrass while building an audience that extends well beyond the genre's core constituency.
