Celebrating 50 Years of Del McCoury is a five-disc boxed set released on McCoury Music on 12 May 2009, with fifty tracks and a twelve-page booklet of photographs from the McCoury family archives. All of it was recorded with the Del McCoury Band, and most of it in a recent run of sessions in which the band re-cut more than thirty songs from the first forty years of Del’s career; eighteen further tracks come from the band’s recent recordings.

McCoury sings and plays guitar, with his sons Ronnie on mandolin and Rob on banjo, Jason Carter on fiddle, and Alan Bartram and Mike Bub sharing the bass. McCoury was born in Bakersville, North Carolina, in 1939, and joined Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys in February 1963, first as a banjo player and then, when Monroe hired Bill Keith a few days earlier, on guitar and lead vocals; he left in February 1964. Ronnie joined the Dixie Pals, his father’s band, on mandolin in 1981 and Rob in 1987, and by the end of that decade the group had become the Del McCoury Band. McCoury was inducted into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2011.

The set draws on songs by many writers. “I Wonder Where You Are Tonight” is credited to Johnny Bond, “High on the Mountain” to Ola Belle Reed, “Nashville Cats” to John Sebastian and “1952 Vincent Black Lightning” to Richard Thompson, and McCoury is credited with “Dreams,” “Evil Hearted Woman” and others of his own.
