Cold Wind was Open Road’s first nationally distributed album, released by Rounder in October 2002 (Rounder 11661-0510-2). The band came together in Fort Collins, Colorado, when singer and guitarist Bradford Lee Folk teamed up with mandolin player Caleb Roberts, and took its name from the model of Stetson its members wore on stage. It had made one earlier album, recorded in Boulder at the end of 1999 and issued in 2000.

The album was recorded in October 2001 at Velvet Studio in Boulder and produced by Sally Van Meter. Folk, the band’s main lead singer and songwriter, plays guitar, with Roberts on mandolin, Jim Runnels on banjo and Ben O’Connor on bass. Dan Mitchell plays fiddle on most tracks. Stuart Duncan takes the fiddle on four, among them the title track and the instrumental “South Saluda Ramble,” and Eddie Stubbs, long a member of the Johnson Mountain Boys, plays on “Some Things Does, Some Things Don’t.” Van Meter adds Dobro to that song and to “Petals in My Pocket,” and guitar to “Sally-Jo.”

By the time of the band’s first East Coast tour, in the summer and fall of 2002, Eric Thorin had replaced O’Connor on bass and Robert Britt had replaced Mitchell on fiddle.
