Cold Wind (Rounder 11661-0510-2, 2002) is the Rounder Records debut from Open Road, a bluegrass quintet formed in Fort Collins, Colorado. Bradford Lee Folk (guitar, lead vocals), Dan Mitchell (fiddle), Jim Runnels (banjo), and Caleb Roberts (mandolin) form the core; producer Sally Van Meter (dobro) contributes instrumental color throughout. The album blends hard-driving traditional bluegrass with original material and earned the band back-to-back IBMA Emerging Artist of the Year nominations in 2001 and 2002. Note: the catalog's personnel entry also lists Joe Val, Jim Buchanan, and Eric Levenson — names associated with a different Joe Val Rounder album (Rounder 0182, 1983) — and appears to reflect a data error mixing two unrelated records.
