Cuttin' Grass Osborne Brothers Style from 1963 catches Bobby and Sonny Osborne in the early years of their development as one of the more innovative acts in 1960s and early 1970s bluegrass. "Night Train to Memphis" — drawn from the country and pop repertoire — hints at their willingness to reach outside strict bluegrass convention for material. Bobby Osborne's high tenor was among the most technically demanding voices in the genre, and Sonny's banjo work was developing the sophisticated approach that would characterize their later Decca recordings. The Osbornes were unusual among their generation in incorporating electric instruments and drums on some recordings and in seeking commercial crossover. As a document of the band in their early Decca period, the album provides useful context for the more celebrated recordings they made later in the decade.
